A Thai restaurant on Main Street
Palm Thai Restaurant is a Thai restaurant in Madison, New Jersey. It serves dine-in, takeout and delivery, caters events, holds a 4.3 rating from 282 Google reviews, and takes online orders through Toast.
Someone who finds the restaurant on Google usually wants three things before ordering: the menu, the prices and the opening hours. The site had to give them all three quickly, on a phone as well as a computer.
02
An old site still showing a pandemic notice
The old site was hand-built HTML on a dark brown background. The home page still carried a pandemic notice about cleaning protocols, the opening hours were nowhere on it, and the whole site was laid out for a computer screen, so on a phone people had to zoom in to read it.
The mailing-list form made visitors type an anti-spam code, and there were no terms or privacy pages. Every old address ended in .html, and each had to lead to its new page, so that saved links and the pages Google already knew would not turn into 404s.
03
Black, cream and beige, so the food leads
The new site is black and cream, with beige and brown as accents. Headings are set in Anton, heavy and condensed, body text in Host Grotesk, and a line of Thai in Kanit, "รสชาติไทยแท้" (real Thai flavour), says at a glance that this is a Thai kitchen.
The home page opens on a full-screen plate of shrimp pad thai, then six favourite dishes with their prices and order links, real Google reviews, the restaurant’s story, the menu sections, catering, the mailing list, and the address and opening hours, all on one page that reads top to bottom.
04
Eight pages and all 107 dishes
The menu page holds all 107 dishes with prices and descriptions in 13 sections, from appetisers, soups and salads to curries, desserts and drinks, with category filters across the top that work with one thumb on a phone.
The about page tells the restaurant’s story beside a photo of the real shopfront. Catering explains how to order for small and large parties, promotions invites diners onto the mailing list, and contact gathers the phone number, address, order link and each day’s hours. The terms and privacy pages are new; the old site had neither.
05
Ordering stays on Toast
The restaurant already takes online orders on Toast, so we didn’t build a second cart. Every Order online button, in the header, on each dish and in the floating button, goes straight to their Toast page.
The new mailing-list form asks for an email address only, says what will be sent, and stops spam with a hidden field instead of a code to type.
06
SEO so Google reads the restaurant right
Every old .html address redirects with a 301 to its matching new page. Each page has its own title and description, the menu page named for people searching for a Thai menu in Madison, and restaurant schema gives Google the address, phone number, cuisine, opening hours and menu link, with breadcrumbs on the inner pages.
